This course offers to address changing concepts of aesthetic values in poetry in different ages; critical discussion of Modernism; modernist aesthetics characterized by dislocation or abstraction of elements from nature into invented and autotelic artefact; dramatic shift from temporal aesthetic of Romantics to poetics of space in; relationship of an aesthetics of release and enduring forces of restraint. In this course, we will study some of the most accomplished and influential poems contributed by British, American, African, and South Asian poets. We will also discuss a set of key problems in poetics, or the theory of poetry, ranging from rhyme and metre to the aesthetic ideals of transcendentalists, Romantics, and Modernists.
The aim of this course is:
1. 1 To offer an in-depth knowledge about the approaching and analyzing poetry as a genre
2. To prepare students for offering a succinct critique of poetic forms
3. To offer an understanding of contemporary debates reflecting on poetic expression and its aesthetics
4. To expose students to a diverse poetic expression from across the world
By the end of the course, the students will be able to:
1. Demonstrate a reasonable knowledge about the genre of poetry and its aesthetic meanings
2. Be able to understand the cultural, political and aesthetic dimensions of the poetic expressions
3. Understand the key theories about aesthetics and poetry and practically apply them on the poems that we discuss
